 We were proud to stage a pre-Christmas lecture from Jeremy Tankard , creator of 'Bliss' and one of the UK's leading type designers. Sponsored by Graphics International Magazine and held at the impressive new Westland Place Gallery N1, Tankard's talk ("From Hamburgefons To The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog And Beyond") was accompanied by eclectic visuals projected from his G3 Powerbook onto the gallery wall. Not only was this a whirlwind history of type but very much a chronological account of Jeremy's early inspirations, his belated appreciation of geometry and the resulting impact on his work, the schooling at St Martin's and the RCA, his experience as Type Director at Wolff Olins and the eventual decision to go freelance and develop his own font collection. What comes over in Tankard's work is an obsession with detail. The man is a perfectionist and the audience were intrigued by how his scientific approach is fused with his observational love of shape and form to create his fonts. Many of us gasped at why he considered an early Wood Type design unworthy of further development and were fascinated by the industrial background to his 'Shire Types' family. Throughout proceedings Jeremy took questions from the floor, ranging from enquiries about TrueType hinting to what he kept in his fridge after we'd been taken on a brilliant virtual tour of his Studio in North London! Tankard rounded off a wonderful presentation by featuring current releases 'Enigma' and 'Blue Island', imagery from his website and, on the eve of the new millennium, discussing OpenType & future directions in font technology.
