FONTWORKS NEWSLETTER // SEPTEMBER 2005

Featured this time around:
- Microsoft favourites now available from Fontworks
- Combatting foreign language blues in Quark
- New Emigre Vista Sans release
- Font of the month: Tourette from Virus
- Fontworks sponsors St Bride Conference / House booklet

- CORE MICROSOFT FONTS NOW AVAILABLE:
Our partners Ascender Corporation have entered into an historic agreement with Microsoft which makes all their core application and web fonts such as Verdana, Tahoma, and Trebuchet available for purchase. And now you can even buy PostScript versions for the first time. Arial Unicode will be of particular interest to developers needing global language coverage and the quality of the hinted OpenType fonts will be music to your ears if you're a web developer or designer struggling manfully with PowerPoint. Check out the new MS font, Nina, a sturdy sans in 4 weights.

View and buy Ascender's MS fonts here.

- FOREIGN LANGUAGE FONT PROBLEMS IN QUARK:
If you're being driven up the wall by foreign language fonts, particularly in Quark on OS X, then we have solutions for you that will solve your importing, formatting and layout blues. Contact us sales@type.co.uk for further advice and details on hybrid fonts that bridge the gap between Mac OS 9 (Quickdraw) & OS X (Quartz).

- NEW FROM EMIGRE: VISTA SANS
Sketched by Xavier Dupré while on holiday in Sumatra, the resulting text face takes on some of the eye-catching idiosyncrasies of Sumatran shop signs (especially the Alt weights) but has been refined to become a fully functional and versatile sans family comprising 6 uprights (Light to Black) with italic, Small Cap and alternate variants - in all, an impressive 36 fonts.

View and buy Vista Sans here.

- FONT OF THE BLOODY MONTH: TOURETTE
Jon Barnbrook's VIRUS foundry has recently grown with the addition of Tourette, a whimsical and delicate font based on light slab serif letterforms from the 18th and 19th Century. Sharing design credits with Virus collaborator Marcus McCallion (see his own Undt collection as well on type.co.uk), Tourette comes in Normal and Extreme weights, the latter containing intricate flourishes and sweeping swash characters. An effing treasure.

- FONTWORKS SPONSORS ST BRIDES CONFERENCE & HOUSE BOOKLET
Fontworks is delighted to announce co-sponsorship of next month's St Bride Conference (10, 11, 12 October 2005) and the accompanying booklet which is being designed this year by House Industries. Now in it's fourth year, the conference theme this time is "Temporary Type"; the guys at House have been given carte blanche to interpret this as they wish and design the 4 colour A5 booklet in a limited edition run of 400. All delegates will receive a copy and Fontworks will retain a certain number for sale after the event. The booklet will also feature 3 spreads designed by Nick Cooke (G-Type). Watch this space for an announcement on how to get hold of a copy!
